On January 11, the local authorities announced the results of how the municipal road service has coped with snow and slippery ice crust on the roads of Ekaterinburg.

Active work was carried on during the whole first ten days of January. The situation in Ekaterinburg was complicated by heavy snowfall on January 4 and January 5. In 24 hours, the city saw a monthly amount of snow. Right after that came severe frosts, about -30oC (-22oF).

As a result, roads were full of snowdrifts that quickly froze and turned into hard snow and slippery ice crust. All available snow-cleaning equipment was used to make the city cleaner.

During the whole Yule week, more than 400 snowplows and some 380 road fettlers worked daily.

At first, they cleaned bridges, flyovers, and narrow streets, then main streets and other busy roads and streets (the so-called 1st category).

The work is still going on. As the main streets are ready for business as usual, the snowplows are going to actively clean the streets and roads of the so-called 2nd and 3rd categories, side streets, and driveways to houses.

During the first 10 days of 2010, more than 600 tons of deicing material have been used on the roads of Ekaterinburg.
